to echo many here it doesn't bother me that they some how thought this was a superior version of explorer but it does bother me that I can't set it back
Windows 7 always asks me if I want to merge or replace and if I want to keep the old copies, have you accidently set a default action somewhere?

Not seen any delay in opening explorer windows either

The search is pretty good, it's a bit slow on mine though since I got round to importing several gigs worth of old outlook files. Before that it was instant.

Is your hard drive up to the task and have you got indexing switched on?

not sure it was someone else's box I was using, search wise I always use Agent Ransack- Windows search has always been very slow

I'm sure with use i'd get used to these things just my first impression was 'this is not an improvement'

You can get replacements for the default Explorer if you don't like it, which add all kinds of stuff.

sweet! do they replace the existing explorer (which would be a bold move!) or is it more like an app like explorer2?

Windows indexing does seem to have moved on, only time I've seen it hamper performance was after adding those large outlook files which took a bit of processing to index. Of course I could have put them in a folder which I'd marked as not to be indexed.

I've noticed if you leave windows 7 for a couple of minutes the hard disk and CPU activity will start up, obviously something is going on in the background maintenance wise. As soon as you touch the mouse it stops.

If the search was taken away from me, I'd seriously miss it. I've got very lazy and use it for almost everything. I'd struggle to find half the windows settings if I had to browse to them

That's my only worry with having an SSD as my main drive, with it being silent I can no longer hear when my HD is being thrashed by Windows so god knows if it is or not.

There's no HD activity indicator on my PC, not sure if there's a reliable desktop gadget that gives that type of info. I may have to trust W7 SSD optimisations do actually work out of the box and my SSD isn't going to fall over exhausted to failure from too many writes.
Feist - 1234. One camera, one take, no editing. Superb. How they did it

resource monitor (comes with windows 7) has a page for disk activity

however, I wouldn't say that the disk is being thrashed, it just looks like there is a bit of tidying up going on.

Never used one myself but I think they become your default tool.

                  Search for "windows explorer replacement"

We've gone a tad off topic, but what the hell

I'm using Windows7 and have been for quite a while now, I think I first installed it within a month of the release. Given the choice I would have preferred to lose the default start menu for a Win2000 lookalike as I did with XP, but I live with it. The negative to me (similar to the ribbon) is that the damn thing can't be re-sized and it's unnecessarily wide. Apart from that Win7 suits me fine.

What screen res have you got?
