ExtremeML + OpenXML SDK

I discovered ExtremeML and OpenXML SDK this morning.

It's a way of creating Excel spreadsheets from .net apps.

Brilliant! I've written a quick and dirty prog that extracts prices from my database and creates a futures spread matrix spread sheet in 40-50 lines of code.



I've got loads of things like that to write. I'll be able to know 'em out in no time. I'm so happy, I might reward myself with a beer tonight.

@HairyArsedBloke: Thanks, so much, for starting this thread. I am the developer of ExtremeML and it has been a labour of love for many weeks.

Pretty easily when it specifies Excel's file format - apart from anything else (user-defined styles and such), think of how much legacy data it has to be able to represent if somebody opens an old spreadsheet and then does a "Save As..." into the XML format

Hint: it even has to cope with a bug originating in Lotus 1-2-3

I am developing an application to read XML file and create Excel files as per the existing Excel templates. Could you please tell me how I can read an Excel Template file to create a new Excel files?

Only discovered on here last week that excel 2007 was just a bunch of zipped xml files. Quite useful when looking for all the wierd link faults it invents. Aint nature wonderful.

Off topic but shouldn't that make it easy to do excel sheets that do that xlbr thingy that HMRC is to fost upon us shortly? There is an HMRC xlbr spec on their site.

I started using OpenXML SDK 2.0 recently, it's pretty cool and great you can mess about with Office files without needing to fire up Word or use some reverse-engineered 3rd-party product.

The specs are pretty fearsome but for basic things, I'm finding it ok; the only problem being MSDN's propensity to be very dry and example-free.

I forgot I started this; that's old age for you.

I haven't touched this stuff since, well, about a week after making the post. The progs are still running every day. Nothing to report really.

The FileHelpers library is cool too. I was using that a bit recently.
