    FTP woes

On two different FTP accounts, I am having problems uploading files. I can login and see the contents of the dir, and start an upload. Using Filezilla the transfer seems to always stall at either 0.9% or 1.2% (always those two numbers) and may simply hang, or keep restarting and then again stop at the same point.
Windows FTP is not great but I get similar types of problems there... it starts uploading and after a short while I get a timeout error.

FTP used to work fine, and I don't know if it's these accounts in particular (both have the same service provider although purchased on opposite sides of the world) or if "FTP is broken on my PC"... can that even happen?!

Does the problem occur with all files?

Could there be a firewall issue? Can't really see it if the download starts and then stops after a little bit.

I use CoreFTP Lite (free!) for mine - just send me your username and password and I'll see if I can connect

(As an aside, I once worked in a Catholic area where the client refused to accept use of FTP as an abbreviation because they found it do offensive)

Fetch does the job for me.

Obviously, you need to get a Mac before that will work for you .

What privileges does your account have on the receiving machine/directory?
          Is there free space there?
          Can you download?
          WZS, try the command line.

FTP could be broken if the service or daemon or whatever is not running, but I'd guess you wouldn't be able to list remote directories if that happened?

Does the FTP server have quotas set on how much you can upload or a timeout limit for connections?

I had a problem in Filezilla where it tried to open multiple FTP connections to the FTP server. But the FTP server would refuse more than one instance of a given username/password. Digging around in the settings of Filezilla, turning that option off made it work perfectly evermore. HTH.

Coincidentally I was having trouble with FTP last night between two systems on my home LAN. I spent ages mucking around with firewall settings until I noticed that one of the ethernet switch LEDs was out. Doh, it was a cable not seated properly.

Another thought - could it be an active versus passive FTP problem?

Sounds like a firewall issue. FTP will use standard ports 21 and 22 (from memory) and then will open op random ports greater than 1024 for data transfer. This is a b!tch to get firewalls to accept without tunneling software. Your symtpoms are identical to those casued by a misconfigured firewall.

Is the FTP server at an ISP? Is it reputable? The firewall could also be at your end.

FTP is with GoDaddy. I have accessed it previously and it suddenly broke a little while ago and remains broken. On two accounts... someone else can use it from their PC with the same account.

Uploading starts, but stalls... I can actually see the small part of the file uploaded as can other users. So is firewall still a possibility? I don't get any warnings asking me if I should allow it.

Wondering if it could be an ISP thing?
