We're on page 2 and no one has suggested you need a Mac. Not even Fitzy.

Is the Mac to protect him from all the anti-windows frothing?
I can definitely see how the waterproof properties will come in handy there!

I've come to the conclusion that the driver for the Atheros wireless built into the Acer Aspire R3600 is not working 100% under Windows 7.

Hopefully a proper Windows 7 driver will be released soon and it will be able to cope with more than 1 mbit bandwidth.

Googling shows lots of angry people with an Atheros wireless and slow connections.

              There's a registry hack though...

              HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Reliability\RunLikeBuggeryButCrashOften = 1

You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.

Try disabling the HomeGroup and see if it helps.

Wasn't someone here saying that C: drives are pegged to run more slowly than other disks so that Winders could run more reliably?

                  Ah, here we go:

NB C: drives on windows servers are deliberately slowed down for disk writes (protection against power fail), D Drive is not so expect better read / write.
Can someone explain the logic there to me please?
Behold the warranty -- the bold print giveth and the fine print taketh away.

yep if you are too tight to buy a proper raid card windows assumes the worst.

Was that M$ protecting its users?

You could try using Wireshark to help in the diagnosis of your networking problem. If you're not familiar with using Wireshark then I'd recommend reading Practical Packet Analysis by Chris Sanders. Even though Wireshark comes from a *nix background, it's been ported to Windows and the aforementioned book explains how to use it under both platforms.
