It's seen the new nano but has told me I'm not authorised to download the bought songs from itunes - and to add insult to injury it won't load a software update either.

How many times have the songs from iTunes been downloaded (I think you have the rights to do it 5 times)

The description is "The iPod "Cojak's IPod" cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-124)."

searched for it on the apple forums, it doesn't look good - no real fix for it from what I can see

That was my conclusion too - plenty of people reporting the problem but no solutions other than some references to conflicting drivers.
Where are we going? And what’s with this hand basket?

Personally, I'd take it right back to John Lewis and get it replaced

OK - so sorted out the -124 problem by turning off and on the Apple Mobile Device in Services.

Sorted out the non-syncing problem by pulling out the (powered) hub and plugging directly into the motherboard usb.

And it appears to be syncing my itune songs despite the pop-up box saying otherwise, but will confirm this once it's finished...

I think that JL are well aware of the software issues around the new ipod...

The hardware is ok - it's not their fault that the rest of it is a pile of tulipe...
