Ah well, it's been a damn fine machine for five years and still has plenty of life left in it for various purposes, but I suppose I'll have to use Lion as the excuse to get a new one
That's interesting, I'd never heard that Lion would not run on some Intel Macs, or that it was exclusively 64-bit; the latter seems a bold move.

The installer deletes itself afterwards I believe. You might be able to down load it again from the app store now you have paid for it.

    1. Purchase and download Lion from the Mac App Store on any Lion compatible Mac running Snow Leopard.
    2. Right click on “Mac OS X Lion” installer and choose the option to “Show Package Contents.”
    3. Inside the Contents folder that appears you will find a SharedSupport folder and inside the SharedSupport folder you will find the “InstallESD.dmg.” This is the Lion boot disc image we have all been waiting for.
    4. Copy “InstallESD.dmg” to another folder like the Desktop.
    5. Launch Disk Utility and click the burn button.
    6. Select the copied “InstallESD.dmg” as the image to burn, insert a standard sized 4.7 GB DVD, and wait for your new Lion Boot Disc to come out toasty hot.

Now I wonder if that disk would then allow an upgrade on another device.....
It works and it does (sort of).

You can't install as an upgrade over anything below Snow Leopard but you can do a clean install with it. Will have a go at the weekend on the iMac and see how it goes.

    Ditto for virtualbox.
Runs fine for me on my 4GB, 2011 i7 15" MBP.

I did have to run some updates after installing Lion. For example Live Mesh required an update before it would run again.

Also annoying is that I've found that Front Row has been dropped. Spent an annoying amount of time getting it re-installed.

(I use Front Row as a media centre app with an old Apple Remote Control)

pps. This scrolling switch will take some time to get used to.
They will also let you return it and get the new version is it's within a month or so of release. And you can get Lion for free on the Up-To-Date program if you bought it after the 8th June.
