Graphics card on my laptop was broken a few months ago.
Found that it would fix itself if I blocked the ports up and let the heat rise
Once I got round to calling them, Dell replaced it, engineer said that the original damage was caused by excessive heat (see thread about my laptop over heating)

My main PC hard drive packed up earlier this year , and I hadn't backed up the data for a good 6 months.
I tried loads of things to get the damn thing to tick over, just long enough so to grab all the files I hadn't backed up. Even looked at data recovery specialists, who would have charged approx £600 for the priviledge of looking through my personal files.
Eventually I came across a 'remedy' on the net which advised freezing the drive. I did, overnight, and tried connecting it up in the morning. The BIOS recognised it but otherwise it didn't work.
Froze it again, this time for a week. Plugged it back into the PC, sitting on an icepack - and hey presto it worked! I quickly grabbed all the files, expecting the drive to die... but it lived on and on. I installed a new drive anyhow but the old work is stored safely away just in case.

Many an Xbox 360 has been saved by running it rapped in towels until the GFX card re-connects itself, the new ones run cooler so not a problem anymore.

Any gamers?
My graphics card came up with corruptions while booting, and in the BIOS, and lines when booting windows, and then a prompt BSOD.

It was out of warranty and was convinced I would be having to buy a new one.
BUT ....
After a little investigation on the net
, a number of people encountering similar issues said that they had baked the main board from the GPU in their ovens. It basically melts the solder and forces fractured connections to reconnect.
So not having anything to lose, I decided on this kill or cure process.
Preheat oven to 235 deg C, strip down card to remove cooling fans etc.
Bake main board for 8-8.5 mins supported on balls of cooking foil, remove and leave to cool.
Replace cooling mechanism etc.
Replace in case.
IT WORKS AGAIN. Technology what a marvel.
