This reminds me of something I read a while ago about HP drivers for Linux and OS X.

Apparently HP USB printers don't share very well and this is a deliberate move by HP since in their view of the world you should get a separate USB printer for every computer.

There are however open source drivers out there which don't have this restriction, Gutenprint, I think.

Totally agree. Had HP C5180 installed. Good printer but removing it was like removing a virus. Left bits of code everywhere on the machine, local apps, windows, prog files, IE addins, schedules.

Think I solved the undeletable problem by delving into the properties, you need to change ownership so it's not just trusted installer. Also run the installer cleanup utility from MS site, there's about 3 things left in there.

No idea how to fix it but just to echo that I too have had issues with HP devices that worked well under XP failing to work quite randomly under Vista. I don't have a fix I'm afraid though.

Have a poke in the registry, there must be a flag set thinking it's already installed. Just delete the keys.

I figured out what level 4 means, and ran it. With elevated privileges. Still no joy I'm afraid.

Vista 32. Home edition.

Don't mind me I'm just grouchy. Everything I have tried to do today has gone wrong.

I'll run it again, although I don't recall being asked for any options. Perhaps I need to run it in elevated mode, or compatibility mode.

As I type this, it is through my 3 dongle, as my broadband service / wireless router has packed up.
