As someone who hasn't looked at creating a webpage since the early 90s (a page full of drinking games) I was a bit intimidated about creating one now - when I check the code for websites CSS code means nothing to me. I've just downloaded MS Expression Web, as apparently I can build WSYWIG and it will sort the CSS for me.

Waiting to see how badly I can screw it up at the weekend

To be fair, the images are large because that's what he's selling. Photographers don't have the luxury of reducing the size of the images on their websites too much because if they did, they'd get no work. Also, this isn't his primary business site: it's a sub-site for a particular area in which he works, and the potential clients who are the primary consumers of it aren't starved for bandwidth.

He is, in fact, an expert at reducing image file size for web use without compromising perceived image quality. If I want guidance on that rather recondite area of expertise, he's the person I'll ask.

Compare his site to almost any other photographer who puts images of that perceived quality on their site, and you'll see that his site is literally megabytes smaller than theirs.

But the OP asked for examples of WP themes being used on real business sites, and that's why I linked to it.

Yep a lot of those photos are 500k or so in size and some pages load a lot of them. One thing Wordpress doesn't seem to do well is emphasis how big a photo is....

You don't really notice when you have 150mb but I can see the problem....

    Yup, Wordpress here too.

I haven't had time to pore through CC photo galleries to tart it up, but I have added SlideShare presentations and videos I've created.

I know I really shouldn't but Benger Blog | Anyway, about me is a decent example of a nice design. The template seems to cost $43 or so but peanuts in the scheme of things.

Whilst I'm not a web expert I have technical skills but would prefer some sort of authoring tool.

Nothing fancy, just looking to create a clean, simple website with some editable content.

Thanks all, look forward to the suggestions. Especially if you have used a tool for your own website.
