A double major motion picture premiere tonight, starting with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) in which we are forced to consider whether the descendants of Caesar's refugees, now more widely dispersed and developing disparate communities, might not devolve into undesirable patterns of behaviour? A very good start to what is expected to be a new trilogy, but also very unsettling in its implications of what may be to come

And as I was concerned that the apes that hang out here might be perturbed by that, some light relief before bedtime in the form of Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003) in which our heroine goes to Washington to seek to enact a law against testing cosmetics on animals. It's an entertaining sequel, and although the legislative process of the USA seems to be shown in a rather ridiculous light, I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually quite close to the reality of how things are done in that rather juvenile country

There was one bit at the end which seems a bit too Hollywood Fantasy but which is, from my own experience, actually very realistic, so SPOILER ALERT: her dog and its mother get to meet and are all over each other, despite not having met since the younger one was a puppy. We had a dog which was a puppy from our next door neighbours' dog, born in 1970. We then moved away from Liverpool in 1971 when our dog was about a year old, or maybe slightly less. Sometime around 1975 or 1976 we went back to Liverpool for Christmas and popped back to the old place on Christmas Eve to say hello to our various former neighbours, unannounced. As it happened, just as we got out of the car across the road, the neighbours with the dog came out of their front door. Our dog immediately started straining at the leash, wagging its tail furiously and looking directly at its mother, and the mother did exactly the same! So they were the neighbours we visited first, and the mother and daughter were all over each other. It was lovely to see, and means that I can safely say that the similar scene at the end of the film was probably the most realistic bit

Anyway, then I watched another couple of episodes of the final season of The Wire

The sun arrived eventually, so it's quite a pleasant evening out there now. I celebrated by sorting out the recycling in the kitchen, which was getting out of hand due to my laziness over taking it to the bins, or even putting it out for the management people to take for me. So I ended up taking two bags over there myself

Possibly the final problem with the parental home was that the outside drain from the kitchen wasn't draining at all well. But my sister and her husband chucked some drain cleaner down it and it's OK now, saving us the trouble of getting Dyno-rod out

Yesterday, some telecommunications bods turned up wanting to run a cable to the house for broadband, starting by drilling a hole in the garden wall. Luckily the neighbours spotted them and stopped them before they did so, pointing out that the house wasn't yet the property of the new people. Turned out they were just in the area and had some spare time, knew the job was on the list for next week, and thought they'd get a head start on it

However, this reminded my sister that no wall drilling ought to be necessary. When our parents had the drive relaid with block paving, about twenty-five years ago, part of the installation was an underground conduit between house and pavement, specifically for use when new cables needed to be laid in future. The future is now here, but it'll be the new family that gets the benefit of their foresight - assuming one of us can work out exactly where said conduit is and how to access it

The day started off cloudy but brightened up considerably thereafter. Currently 23 degrees, and the high was 24. Looks like thunderstorms may occur overnight. Barometer down to 1018 mBar.

In a mirror to 15th November 2019, I did a jeans wash today. They have been washed in the intervening period, I hasten to add.

Meanwhile on the 15th of November 2019 NF had a variety of casserole with rounds of French sticks replacing potato slices, followed by watching yet more Bab5, whereas I watched yet more BTVS and Angel, whilst LM was washing her jeans.

Trip to that Swansea on the bus to take the accumulated pile of discards to Oxfam, unfortunately I brought a pile only slightly smaller back with me. .

Lunch: there was.

Entertainment: bits of the Y&Y substitute and TWATO (for those of a nervous disposition: The World At One).

Finished "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and moved on to "The Honourable Skoolboy".

Discovered that I'd bought "The night manager" again, and "Silverview" again, and "The Steam Pig" again, not that the latter two matter but the first was £9.99 and was crossed out on my list.

Tea: beans on toast etc.

Entertainment: Freecell score: 91%, running average: 76%.

Tonight's major motion picture premiere was The End We Start From (2023) in which a woman gives birth just as British society is crumbling under an onslaught of storms causing massive flooding, and has a pretty wretched time thereafter. Extremely bleak stuff

I went to M&S first, primarily because the slippers I bought when I got this place are falling to bits so I need new ones. Just under two years they've lasted, but I've been working from home all that time so they get worn all day rather than just for a few hours in the evening
