
I’ve been working on a thing that lets you drill down into an extremely large dataset, aggregating values at the top level and then letting you expand rows to see the breakdown; there’s about twenty columns and you can go down seven levels, with thousands of rows if you were to expand the whole thing. Last week, I spent a bit of time adding a loading indicator, as it could take two or three seconds for the data to load when you expanded a row. Then I set to work optimising the data retrieval and by this afternoon, I’d got it loading so fast that most of the time, your visual cortex doesn’t register the presence of the loading indicator before the new rows appear
