That’s Monday done! Nineteen more days until I finish for the year

Today went surprisingly well, considering I was very much lacking enthusiasm. I’d worked out various bits over the last week while feeling my way around the project, which depends heavily on code for collecting together and analysing large amounts of data that was written by other people around 2019 to 2020 and has, shall we say, some idiosyncrasies. This afternoon, to my surprise, I was able to quickly pull together various bits from my experimentation and get the whole basis for the planned app up and running! So the next step is largely styling UI components according to the designs

It’s still possible we’ll have to dig deeper into the data-related code that nobody wants to touch if we need a performance boost at a later stage, but we can cross that bridge after we’ve burned it

The chemist knocked me back for a Covid jab; apparently I don’t meet the criteria any more, so the nurse who gave me my flu jab had got it wrong

I told them I’d pay for one, but they don’t do private ones! Don’t want to have to go to Boots, but they may be the only option

It did occur to me that they might have told me at the original appointment on Friday and saved me a walk in the drizzle today

Lunch has been a steak slice - Ginster's, as they were out of Pukka ones when I did the shopping

It wasn’t as nice as a proper one; I won’t bother with them again

And, with that, the rain returns.

Meanwhile on the 28th of February 2020 LM inherited a ring from her Nan, funereal tales were related by NF and me, whilst on the 29th Brillo popped in, NF was watching yet more Nordic Noir, Brillo popped in, and WTFH discovered it was raining, just in time to take the dog for a walk, whilst around here it was alternating rain with sun.

Walk (unabbreviated, towpath) walked. It didn't rain on me. . Clockwise today since I had someone to chat to on the way down to town. .

Timed that right: hammering down again now.

It’s a mostly clear sky with just a few areas of cloud, mainly off towards the horizon - though one of them happens to be blocking the sun at the moment, so it’s not actually very sunny! Seems to be starting to brighten up now though. It’s likely to cloud over more and will probably (70%) rain around lunchtime and into the afternoon. It’s 11°C but “feels like” 8°, and won’t be getting any warmer than 13°; the barometers are down at 992/1000mB

Had an email suggesting I put my little business on Wikipedia. Never heard they did advertising. I see CUK is on there, last sentence says " The forum also includes an ineffective swear filter"

I’ve added it to the list of things to check on the new software. Can’t have CUK without “tulip”!

This evening, I did a bit of fiddling around with the CoreGraphics stuff. And then I read some more of Terraplane

Monday again tomorrow. I see I only have five more weeks to go before I finish for Christmas and New Year, as I’ve saved up a load of leave and will finish on the 11th!

so - another half dozen books to look forward to.

I reckon it’s worth reading them as I’ve been doing, in the order of the internal timeline rather than the order they were written. The whole lot of them are set across a century or so, starting circa 1990; so Random Acts of Senseless Violence is recognisable as society in “the present day” as it were, just starting to fall apart. The social, political, and technological changes become more extreme as you go through the series, yet there’s a clear progression happening and you can see how they got to wherever their “here” is from there

Much of the afternoon was spent in a state of increasing confusion as I tried to get my head around how the new forum software works. Sorted it all out enough to know how to get some basic add-on functionality going in the end and, perhaps more importantly, worked out a few important internal spots to stick breakpoints so I can get a better idea of what it’s up to

On arrival at Mum's my brother was sat on a chair just inside the garage having a fag and looking glum. He then asked me to park on the road rather than the drive because he needed to get his car out and test whether he'd fixed it or made the problem worse.

I jumped in for the ride as I've not been in his Porsche since he bought it last year. After a hurtle down the local dual carriageway, he pronounced himself very pleased with the several weeks of troubleshooting, parts replacing, more troubleshooting, more parts replacing.

The drive home was uneventful.

Dolly Parton and other country music singers tribute thing with ll3 was ok last night. We disagreed over whether her *** were genuine. I was proved right when the same lady performed as Patsy Kline.

Volunteer thing at local nature reserve this morning.

Off to see Mum today. My brother is going to be away for a week in Czech from the middle of next week, so we need to agree a plan for how she will feed herself. Considering she will eat every biscuit in the house in a single day, such planning is going to be difficult. We also need to discuss the C-word and various family arrangements.
