Morning denizens

Last night saw a repeat of the phenomenon of the bedroom being the same temperature when I awoke as when I went to sleep, but with the starting point a little higher at around 28°

And today is turning into a repeat of yesterday: it’s already 26°C and aiming for 32°, though at least I can spend more time in the living room today. It’s sunny but likely to turn cloudier around lunchtime before going back to sunny this evening, and the barometers are much of a muchness at 1006/1014mB

Tonight’s motion picture premiere was Officer Black Belt (2024), a Korean film on Netflix in which a young martial arts expert finds a purpose in life from helping the Korean probation service to capture violent recidivists. It was OK

Tea has been what Sainsbury’s describe as “Chinese style” pork steaks, with chips. I’m not convinced that it’s what they’re eating in downtown Beijing, but it was very nice anyway

More importantly, it didn’t involve spending much time in the kitchen, because it’s already warm in there even without cooking anything

The shopping has been done!

I went just after twelve and it was hot. Officially 30°C, but the car reckoned 33° and I found no reason to doubt it

It must be about ten years ago that its sensor broke and it would reckon a day like this was -12° or something ridiculous like that

There were back-to-back departmental or team meetings scheduled for this afternoon, but the 15:00-16:00 one was cancelled by a merciful head of something, so I was just able to grab a quick lunch of cold cocktail sausages

And when I came into the living room with that, there was a huge butterfly batting itself against the window trying to get out, having apparently found its way in through the little narrow window out of which I poke the air conditioner hose. So I opened one of the big windows then got around the other side of it and blew gently at it, which encouraged it to shift along and find the way out without any risk of hurting it by trapping it in something - their wings are very delicate. From looking online, it seems to have been a Peacock

No cloud. No breeze. Just a searing fiery ball. Currently 29 degrees with a high of 34 expected. Overnight is not expected to drop below 20. Barometer down to 1018 mBar.

Slept better than I expected to considering the ambient temperature overnight.

Gig3 contract ends on 4 August. I've made the PTB aware but the PM I work with thinks there's a management change a-coming and it could get lost so he's also going to make sure it doesn't expire. However, as HWMBO and I are planning a late August holiday to the Baltics, I won't be too upset at having August off.

Walk (muchly abbreviated, 2 miles) walked in the unbearable heat of the morning. Legs started complaining after about a mile & a half.

On the way out what appeared to be a rather tall lady walked along next door's front path. After some reflection I think it may have been wot used to be my nephew. FFS.

Lunch: brunch. Entertainment: Classic Movies: "The Life & Death of Colonel Blimp". A tale of opportunities missed.

Entertainment: Further Out of Town: sea fishing from small boat, how to prepare a Big Chicken: this is one for NF: didn't show the offing, but the plucking, hanging, drawing, and tying up was covered pretty well. I can see why my grandfather couldn't cope with it, but my gran, being someone who'd been a cook in large house, managed well enough back in the day.

Morning denizens

Clear blue sky here, with that hint of haziness high up and increasing as it comes down to meet the horizon that suggests a warm day to come. And so shall it be: It’s gone from 19°C to 22° in the last forty-five minutes, and won’t stop till 32°. Same again tomorrow! The barometers remain curiously ambivalent at 1007/1014mB

Last night was not at all cool, getting down to 16° but failing to distribute any of that inwards due to lack of wind, meaning the bedroom was still at 26°C when I awoke, as it had been when I went to sleep. I think it cooled slightly then warmed up again, as I half-woke at one point to wrap the discarded duvet cover around myself, though it had been cast away again when I woke up - which I did on the third alarm, having dismissed two and immediately fallen asleep again, suggesting I hadn’t slept at all well

Breakfast is a dairy-free banana, mango and blueberry smoothie, all the fruit being frozen. It’s tasty and refreshing, though of course I’m still having hot coffee as otherwise nothing at all would get done round here

Far too hot here. There’s been no wind to blow cooler air in so despite having had the window wide open, the bedroom is still 26°C

I was always drawing the bedroom curtains in the afternoon to stop the sun heating the room up. Last night noticed the plaster had cracked above the window, assume due to the heat. Fortunately mostly fixed with some No More Nails, just a bit of sanding and repaint needed. I'll use temporary blackout sheet on the window next time.

For tea, I continued this week’s theme of “things that are wholly inappropriate for the weather but that’s what’s in the fridge” by having a roast chicken dinner

I made a bit of an effort with the chicken, shoving half an onion, several cloves of garlic, and a whole lemon cut in half in there. It came out tasting very nice indeed

To go with this, Fear City: New York vs The Mafia on Netflix, about the FBI’s efforts to overthrow the Mob in the 1970s and 1980s
