Morning denizens

Quite a lot of thin layers of cloud stretch to the horizon in most directions, but there’s a lot of blue sky directly above and it seems to be clearing from the northwest-ish. Cold night though: it’s now back up to -1°C, though it “feels like” -7°; and the day itself will only make it to 4°. The barometers are back up a little at 1001/1010mB

Tonight’s viewing was the start of a Netflix documentary series about the Yorkshire Ripper. At least it was British, and therefore didn’t change the subject every thirty seconds

And later, I read more of Going Going Gone

Tomorrow, somebody will be coming round to inspect the flat door because of Grenfell. Weirdly, the other two blocks aren’t tall enough to require this annual check, though they’re almost as tall as this one; it’s the top floor that does it

No rest just yet though, for the AGM of the Limited Company for where I live starts shortly on Zoom. Attendance isn’t mandatory, of course, but I vaguely feel like I ought to show up, if only to find out what the middle-aged middle-class white people are moaning about nowadays

Drain covers are a matter of concern for some, it turns out. And that perennial favourite, parking, was brought up of course. I’m OK with the suggestion that people who have visitors staying over the weekend should ask them to park on the road, but I don’t expect it’ll make much difference

The most amusing moment was when the matter of replacing the cast iron drainpipes on the two old blocks came up. Apparently, like-for-like replacement would cost around a million quid, which is a lot even when split across thirty-odd flats! The expressions on the faces of those who had their cameras on were a sight to behold. But they’re hoping to get planning permission to use ones made of plastic which look like the real thing and have previously been approved for use on listed buildings, so they should end up being charged quite a bit less

For our block, the only potential big ticket item is replacing the doors on the room of storerooms with new fire doors, which they’ve decided can be done out of the block's reserve fund

And apparently we in the new block can also expect a rebate on this year’s management fees, as whatever it all gets spent on hasn’t cost as much as they expected. I assume this will come in the form of a reduction on next year’s charges rather than sending us cheques or whatever, but every little helps!

My only contribution was to ask about the matter of wayleaves so we can get fibre to the premises. Apparently one of the old blocks is getting it in the very near future, the cabling having recently been installed to the building and work on the runs to the individual flats being about to start. It seems our block might be a bit trickier to get to as it could involve digging up the drive. But I’m going to start the process, as I appear to be the only one in this block who had heard of it being a possibility, or even knew what it was

Soup for lunch because, well, it's a weekday and that's all I ever have for lunch midweek. Homemade and this weeks seems more carroty and less spicy than normal.

Was up in Scotland for the weekend to watch Ice Hockey and I have determined that the best rink served food is in Fife.

Lunch: a cold chicken leg. Made a nice change

Still haven’t detected any evidence that anything’s leaking. I started panicking when I realised that the pressure valve on the boiler was showing a lower number than I vaguely remembered it being at previously, which can be evidence of a leak. But a minute or so later the thermostat told it to warm the place up and it went back to where I expected it to be, so I think it’s fine

I really must get it serviced though; the previous owner had it done just before I moved in, at my instigation, but I haven’t got around to having it looked at since

Windows 11 keeps nagging me to install it on my work laptop so I think I will turn off the TPM in the bios to make it go away. My main desktop PC is deemed incompatible because of some hardware non-compliance. I have the extended 1 year support enabled so I'm not living dangerously unpatched.

Our main PC is still running Win 7 but now various things refuse to work on the latest version of Chrome that Win 7 supports, so I guess I ought to upgrade to Win 10 at least. I very much doubt it's Win 11 compatible but I have a spare sitting in the loft ready to go when this one finally gives up.

Meanwhile on the 1st of March 2020 LM had hired a Fiat 500 to take tat to the storage, BR14 was given encouragement about his new gig, AndyGarbs popped in and remarked on the new plastic notes, NF watched a programme about an Orangutan who could undo nuts & bolts, whilst WTFH and scruff discussed moon watches and 8.5 months after 1969.

Walk (unabbreviated, towpath) walked: wind in face going up, despite two extra layers it was fecking perishing. Took 3 miles before I could feel my hands.

Lunch: brunch. Entertainment: Y&Y waffling on about the Chinese & their inventive scams for the cold weather payment. Time to shut the interweb off.

And another afternoon spent scrolling mindlessly through crap on FB.

It's been raining all morning but it's just turned to snow. Big fat lumps coming down. The ground is too wet for it to settle. Currently 4 degrees ('feels' like 1) with a high of 6 expected. Cloud cover set to lift by mid afternoon. Barometer down to 1006 mBar.
