Our Miele WM is, I think, 18 years old. The MiL's old machine is about 25 years old. Neither have missed a beat, and both have had a lot of dog stuff and beach towels through them

It's been a productive morning, by my relatively low standards

First I went over to see if I could get a haircut. She turned out to be there, her husband/partner/whatever not having died of his cancer yet; a medical marvel apparently, having lasted longer on whatever he's being treated with than any other patient his specialists have treated

I was able to get the second-nearest available parking spot on the main road (not actually that main), which saves a lot of faffing about with residents' parking schemes on the side roads. And when I went in, there was nobody ahead of me so I was straight into the chair! I had thought of going quite early, but she said she'd had non-stop customers until a few minutes before I arrived, so I turned out to have timed it just right

After that, onwards to Big Sainsbury's as I was on that side of the river. I didn't need much, but I was able to get a few things that had been either out of stock or just not stocked at all at the Not-as-Big one last week

And so home, where the preferred parking space was pristine and untouched, awaiting my return

Oh FFS, they've rescheduled it to the Tuesday after because they need to get one sent over from Germany!

You would have thought the famously efficient Germans could get it on a lorry some time in the next week, but apparently not

The landlady is coming round today. There's a tree in the alley behind my garden that's been trying to push the wall over and she's getting it removed. That and some other tinkerings being done in lieu of properly fixing the guttering on the roof (as that requires the flat upstairs to also contribute).

Meanwhile on the 7th of February 2020 Brillo popped in, along with BR14, and there was discussion of the Oz customs thing, people carrying credit cards without names on, I watched "STIV: the voyage home" and yet more of "ST: first contact" whereas NF watched the popular spinoff known as "Galaxy Quest". .

In other news, there's sommat wrong with the back door. I'll have a potch with it later.

There's a fairly low layer of grey cloud out there to start the day, presaging the slightly less hot (though not actually cool) day we've ben promised. It's already 19°C, but won't get any worse than 25°, so that's nice. The barometers are up a bit to 1005/1013mB

After sunset, a decent breeze sprang up from the west which has brought the bedroom temperature down a few degrees. It's eased off a little now, but it's helping

Herbs and spices! Long past time they were sorted out

A visual comparison of a pot of cayenne pepper purchased recently with the one that's been here for ages confirms that it's supposed to be red, not yellowy-brown, so the old stuff can go. Similar results for olfactory testing of various herbs: this undated pot with a less faded label smells the same as this one with a BBE date in 2010, so it may be of more recent origin but the contents are of equally limited culinary usefulness

Quite a few duplicates too, though they tend to be more recent purchases. In particular, I clearly kept forgetting that I'd already bought more of Sainsbury's steak seasoning. I suppose I'll just have to eat lots of steaks
