That's The Cruel Sea watched for the umpteenth time. No idea how many times I've seen it over the last fifty years or so

After that, I found time to deal with the pile of takeaway containers which I've finally accepted will never "come in handy"; so they're all packed up ready for a trip to the recycling bins.

Then I got around to assembling the new spice rack I got off Amazon a few weeks ago because the one I've already got has long since overflowed, resulting in innumerable small jars sprawling all over the bit of the worktop near the cooker where they live. At some point I intend to go through them as I know there are a fair few duplicates, due to thinking "Better get some paprika/cumin/star anise etc. just in case I'm running low" whilst shopping. As the new one rotates, I can literally rotate my stock to keep things under control and make sure they get used in the correct order

The old one will still be in use as the reserve storage area for duplicates, and can also keep the less frequently used ones where they'll be handy but not getting in the way

After this morning's round of Monkey Life it looks like the rest of the day will be filled with stuff that gets repeated every three weeks or so. So I'm going to have a traditional Sunday afternoon watching The Cruel Sea (1953)

Busy lunchtime down on the lawn with a couple of squirrels, a crow, some pigeons, and a magpie all putting in an appearance. Much excitement when an elderly couple who live in block B stopped on their way out to scatter some kind of foodstuffs from a Tupperware container across the corner of the lawn; possibly bread, possibly nuts - it was hard to tell from up here. Anyway, one of the squirrels rapidly got stuck in, with the magpie flying over shortly after to check it out and the pigeons also getting a look in. The crow left for some reason though.

Then the two lurchers that live in the block across the lawn came back from wherever it is they go in their cars two or three times a day - they have two cars, with a male and a female chauffeur, and seem to go for a drive most mornings, lunchtimes, and evenings. They were being driven by the male today, and the white one in particular seemed intrigued or even fascinated by the squirrels as they were being led back to their flat, though it was too well behaved to do anything so unseemly as tug at its leash and try to chase them

A bit damp looking. Cloudy. Currently 10 degrees with a high of 12 expected. Low chance of precipitation. Barometer up to 1027 mBar.

Off to visit Mum today. Need to stop for petrol on the way.

Morning denizens

It's grey out though not rainy, bringing an end to the sunny spells. It's very mild for December: 10°C, though also windy enough to "feel like" 4°, and warming up to 12° later - though also getting windier, so who knows what that will feel like? The barometers are back up a bit more at 1013/1021mB

Meanwhile on the 11th of December 2019 it was sunny for NF despite an unexpected visit to the dentist, Brillo was moving his office or desk or something, and LM declared that the only reason she went into work early was so she could leave as early as possible in the afternoon.

Walk (unabbreviated) walked in the grey gloom.

Shopping trip to Morrisons (complete with new card) done dusted washed dried sanitised & put away.

Knackered now. Had to take scarf off on the way back due to incipient overheating.

Lunch: brunch: nothing to listen to on the wireless due to endless Di Ti Di. Doh, there Tom, me old pal, me old beauty. As it were.

More of George Sherston has been read this evening. He spent a hunting season in Leicestershire, but then war came in the summer of 1914. Having spent a few months in the ranks of the yeomanry and ended up with a broken arm for his trouble, he's spent the following season as a trainee infantry officer at a camp in Litherland, an industrial suburb of Liverpool which was also partly rural at the time

Having a massive takeaway brought to me after eating a full Christmas dinner at lunchtime would have been overkill, so tea has been a roast beef butty and a bag of plain crisps

We'd booked a table at the pub-restaurant where we had both wakes, and they do a good Christmas dinner

The clouds have cleared and it's been a nice, sunny day so far. The forecast is still for rain later.

I did the market shopping, then went to Sainsbury's to see what gin was on offer and pick up a couple of bottles. Lone Wolf for £20 is a bargain.

I then stopped for a cuppa before getting the SL8 to Westfield shopping centre to return some trousers at Next. My aim was to get in, drop off, and get back onto the bus home within a hour in order to only pay 1 bus fare. Mission accomplished with 15 mins to spare.

HWMBO has landed at Heathrow and is doing a tour of T5 while BA figure out what stand to put him on. On his third at the moment.
