Right, that’s quite enough of that for the day. Import of threads with their “correct” IDs (i.e. the ones they got in the old forum software) is now working, including important details like keeping users’ thread subscriptions pointing to the right place

I just spent absolutely ages getting confused about why the oldest threads when viewing the forums weren’t the first ones in the database table, before remembering that admin imported stuff from the previous (pre-late-2005) board, but not until a while after the original vBulletin version had launched. So the old stuff comes further down in the database but has earlier timestamps

Even once I’d worked that out, I spent a while puzzling over the fact that the oldest thread in General wasn’t showing up on here, the live site. But I haven’t got the import of posts done yet, and threads are ordered by the date of the most recent post, then by start date. As there are no posts imported, they just go by start date. And good old BrilloPad, presumably bored during lockdown, had replied to the oldest thread in 2020, thereby bumping it

This morning has been largely given over to new forum stuff, specifically, the whole business of preserving the original thread IDs

Luckily, it’s pretty straightforward to override the bits that need special treatment, as they built their vBulletin 5 importer as an extension to their vB4 importer. This means there are already specific methods for getting the relevant data from the database, and I just have to override and adjust them appropriately. I’ve also put together test infrastructure that lets me run parts of the importer in isolation, down to the level of individual methods. So I can create a test for the specific bit I need to modify at each stage, run it under the debugger to see exactly what’s going on in there, then make my adjustments and confirm it’s working as required

Once this is working, it’ll be the posts, the IDs of which need similar treatment in order to preserve the palis!

They responded within five minutes to say it’s being dealt with ASAP though, which is pretty good going for a Friday morning! It took me longer than that just to get my act together to send the email saying “WTF?!”

I awoke unpaid, as the agency has screwed something up. I suspect it’s to do with the recent extension; probably somebody forgot to tick one specific checkbox, as I can see the approved timesheet in certain expected places in their execrable “portal”, but not in others. Oh well, I’ve emailed them about it so I’m sure it’ll be fine

It’s another grey day here after a rainy night, and more rain may (45-50%) be along soon, and continuing (50-60%) through the evening. The wind is a bit less vigorous than on many recent days, so the current 11°C - which is also the high for the day - only “feels like” 8°; but the barometers are pessimistic at 995/1003mB

Lunch: brunch. Entertainment: noon o'clock news. <click> Sadly the Orange Mother****er still isn't dead. Ho hum. Just living in hopeful anticipation of that moment of joy and celebration.

Tea: chicken in white sauce etc. Nice enough. Entertainment: PM waffling on about elections and the imminent attack on Eyeran by the Orange moron.

I finished Peace and War; I enjoyed Forever Peace but it doesn’t have anything to do with the other two apart from being about war and peace

I also did a bit more work on the SwiftUI stuff

It started raining off and on here at lunchtime and it still is, having become steadier this evening; I think it hasn’t stopped for the last hour or more. Oh well, it’s good for the trees

Lunch never happened, because I went and did the shopping instead. So that’s out of the way and the weekend starts here!

As expected, we got stuck into the tech debt thing we’d been putting off, and made a bit of progress before lunch. After lunch, the other dev wasn’t up to working as she’d taken one of her animals to the vet and received some bad news - I don’t know what, thinking it better not to hassle her with questions. This left me on my own for the afternoon, and I pretty much got it all sorted out! There’s a few details left for the mopping up stage, so (with her approval) I’ve left those for her to finish up tomorrow

Now having a bag of salt & vinegar crisps to stave off the pangs of hunger while I decide what to have for tea
