Tonight’s major motion picture premiere was Novocaine (2025) in which our hero has that genetic condition that means you can’t feel pain, and sets out to save the woman of his dreams when she’s taken hostage by robbers at the bank where he works. It’s not bad; it's inclined towards being a comedy, but with plenty of violence that’s too far over the line to be considered slapstick. But maybe a crossbow bolt through the leg is considered slapstick nowadays, and I’m just out of touch with the youth of today? Anyway, it has the most tenuous claims to be a Christmas movie imaginable: the bank robbers near the start are dressed in Santa suits, and when he’s on a date with the young lady before that, he’s wearing a novelty reindeer tie which gets mentioned again at the end; and I think there are one or two minor references to it in dialogue. There are no other indications that it’s Christmas whatsoever that I recall. It’s set in San Diego and all the exterior shots look like it’s the height of summer, and I don’t remember any of the interior sets showing any evidence of seasonal decorations. So it’s entertaining enough, but it’s no Die Hard

As the young lady in it is played by Amber Midthunder, it reminded me to rewatch Prey (2022), the new (then) Predator movie. I seem to recall a lot of fuss about this being the first movie in which the dialogue was mostly in Comanche, and it was when I first watched it. But that seems to have just been for the awards season, as Disney+ now defaults to showing the English version and the Comanche one is an optional extra. I couldn’t be bothered to stop it and switch over when I realised this after I’d started watching it, but it’s a good film either way. I think, all in all, I prefer the Comanche version though

Tea has been battered cod fillet (non-chunky) with chips and beans

This was largely because the beans were the second half of a can and had been in the fridge for a while, so i wanted to use the up before they turned furry

To accompany this, E2 of Titanic Sinks Tonight on iPlayer. They resisted the temptation to have the theme music for this going "A-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh” but it would fit quite well with that title

I decided I had sufficient pep and vigour to go and do some shopping, so off I went to Big Sainsbury’s. Mostly household stuff like kitchen roll, but also some ingredients for stuff I’m planning to make while I have time. It was quite busy, but not insufferably so

I’m used to being the only person in a mask these days, but this time I was approached by a polite young man who asked me where I got it from. I explained that I’d bought a big pack of them off Amazon ages ago during one of the lockdowns, which I was just getting to the end of, and he thanked me and said he’d have a look on there. So perhaps I’ve recruited a convert to the cause of not dying just because you needed a pound of onions and some washing up liquid

I had been thinking of going tomorrow, but it’s good to have got it out of the way while it was on my mind. Otherwise, I just end up wondering if I should go, or should have gone, for the rest of the day

Grey day again, and it’s about to get colder with a number of frosty nights on the schedule. It’s 4°C at the moment (“feels like” 2°) though it should get to 6° through the afternoon. The barometers are down a bit at 1018/1027mB

Meanwhile on the 8th of March 2020 BR14, Brillo, scruff, LM, NF, and WTFH popped in. Apparently the sun shone at one point.

Bought a 2026 calendar. . Another British Birds one with a diary I'll never use.

Washing out on the line not that it's drying muchly.

Lunch: brunch.

Entertainment: someone waffling on about "Jaws (1975)" until I got bored & turned it off.

Stuff in off the line & in the TD. About half a cup of water. Those requiring the iRoned received it, all now airing upstairs.

Tea: chilli con carne etc. Nice enough with added chilli powder.

Entertainment: PM. More crap from the Orange Moron.

Nothing else on this evening as far as the EPG says.

Now halfway through a bottle of nice chianti, fava beans next, then it's a case of waiting for the census taker to turn up. .

While reading, I also exchanged a couple of messages with qntm on Bluesky about a weird JavaScript thing he’s come up with for representing binary data in base 1. It’s a funny old world where you can be reading a book and simultaneously having a conversation with the author about some completely unrelated matter

This evening HWMBO and I have been watching the darts and discussing whether it's worth adding Sky Cinema to Mum's package (with me paying the difference in subscription fees).

Not so far as I'm aware: there's holes all around here but the Neath Disturbance blocks the obvious outcrop from this side of the valley. Up the hill there's lots of holes, sufficient to prevent an extension of a housing estate.

I was wondering when they were putting in the tanks for the rainwater runoff it they'd find a coal seam.

Curiously I recall a circus in that field about 20 years ago and nearly took a photo of an elephant sticking its head through a hedge.

Looking at it now you'd never think there was an oak tree with swallows/swifts slope soaring and catching insects there.

Sic transit & all that. It was all green fields around there then. .

And yes: there are drift mines under the cemetery across the road in a dell which was used in the 1930s as a rubbish dump, thus leading to the refrain "earth to earth, ashes to ashes, half brick to half brick, empty bottle to empty bottle".
