We took advantage of the nicer weather yesterday for more exploration of the old town and I secured the purchase of postcards and stamps. Forgot to take a pen out with me so the writing and posting were delayed to later in the day.

Today we take the ferry to Helsinki.

This evening’s viewing was the remainder of an episode of the motorway cops (who seldom go on the motorway) plus dashcam thing that I started watching the other night. At least they now try to make the dashcam clips vaguely relevant to whatever they’ve interrupted to slot them in

And tonight I read more of To Each This World where the story’s getting going, which makes the author’s occasionally idiosyncratic writing style slightly less distracting

Somebody just posted on Bluesky about trying to learn FORTH. I hope they find my multi-tweet response, including half-remembered snippets of source code from something I wrote on the Atari ST about thirty-five years ago, helpful

Oh lovely. I remember that happening next door. Ever so much fun.

As in "who spilled All Bran in the cutlery drawer".

It wasn't Allbran.

Said rat had come up behind the kitchen units.

The then current cat wasn't much help.

You're never more than 10 feet from a rat.

I had mice in the salting house for a while but the B&Q traps sorted them out.

Found a dead mouse under the burner of the central heating boiler not long after I'd bought the house.

And mice had been exploring the back bedroom which explained why the then current new cat was so innerested in the corner.

Welsh Water are still here sucking silt out of the sewer. And judging by the noises coming from that sucking pipe it's coming out in big lumps.

They do seem to be having fun. Every now & again the pipe blocks up & needs fettling.

They've gone. Side passage has now been domestosed to death to ensure there's nothing nasty about. Couldn't find the bottle of other stuff I was looking for, so the Morrisons bleach had to do.

Lunch: brunch. Entertainment: some chap waffling on about art in a NY museum.

Exciting trip due to the ongoing gas main replacement which, today, involved a minidigger with a concrete breaker attachment and a really big feckoff vacuum cleaner lorry to clean the resulting hole out.

Plus the requisite 5 people standing around looking at it, though they weren't supplied with shovels to lean on.

Gosh. I've walked 4 miles today. Well there's a thing.

Minor potching in the garden: the pile of brambles is now twice the size it was. Once the deluge returns I may have a nice bonfire to get rid of it all.

Jack Hargreaves Old Country: catching a fish he'd never encountered before: American brook trout, which, as expected, isn't a trout. He caught one. Trotting race. He bought the winning horse.

Tea: chilli con carne with rice. Nice enough. Entertainment: PM.

Took some empty jam jars down to the garage so I can put yet more nails in them. .

Entertainment: Bab5 S3 E11 "Ceremonies of Light & Dark". The Nightwatch Nazis take the Good Captain and Delenn prisoner.

Maigret (Cremer version: very long & moody). "Maigret's war of nerves": the one where arranges for a chap to escape from prison.

Thought I recognised the chap playing the Septic: turned out (thanks to imdb) that he was in Foyle's War as the Septic Captain. IRL he died of covid in 2020, poor sod.

Blazian bollox: Secrets in the Dark. Fragments of 12 skulls found in Italy, dated 5500 BC, deposited over a 200 yr timespan. Terracotta Army again. Belgian skeleton comprised of bits & pieces of 7 people, most of which were 4k yr old, with a Roman era skull thrown in for good measure. Mexican pyramid tomb: skeleton covered in cinebar just to make sure it's extra red & extra toxic.

Apparently he'd be 120 if he hadn't died in 1984 when he was 77.

Morning denizens

Clear blue sky with only the merest of wisps in a couple of places, and the open overnight sky has helped cool things down: currently 12°C, though climbing to 21° later. There’ll be a few warmer days as the week progresses, but nothing higher than 24°, before temperatures plummet along with the coming of much rain, just in time for the Bank Holiday! The barometers are down a touch at 1011/1019mB

Yesterday we ended up having a random wander about the old town and towards the harbour. Dinner was at an earlier time so we headed out to see a photography exhibition on the way. Managed to dodge the showers.

Today is our last day in Tallinn. I need to buy, and send, postcards.

Tonight, I read more of To Each This World. I’m getting into the story, but the writer has a couple of tics which grate on me slightly. Worth persevering with though, I reckon

Monday again tomorrow! At least there won’t be one next week

I noticed last week that I was getting tired again, particularly in the afternoon. Yet on Friday, I was fine. I suspect it was due to getting to sleep too late (and being able to sleep in later to make up for it on Friday) so I’m going to try to get to sleep at a more sensible time this week
