Update. It appear to be the result of a nasty piece of adware called Safe Saver.

Schoolboy error really. New laptop, installed AVG free anti virus and thought I was ok. Always forget these free anti virus programs don't deal with adware & spyware.

Off to download Spybot

search for 'custom hosts file' it remaps DNS entries for all the ad suppliers to localhost. Imagine redirecting junk mail straight to the bin at the post box.
