That’s the black & white of it.
The grey is that If police are involved in a case like this then common sense is normally applied, with consenting & sensible adults as long as there is no lasting harm (lasting harm can be a bruise that lasts for more than 20 mins) nothing will be charged.
This will not be the last we see of this type of case: 50 shades is escapist, romantic fiction and not a guide: unfortunately too many people think that it is just that.

The Oh dear part was he had 3 previous convictions for physical abuse and was acquitted despite beating her brutally.
