If the OP is willing to freeze because they are too tight to pay £10 or so for a trailer load at the tip then they can discount it as an option.

Amazed to think that none of you 'big-shot' contractors have open log fires in your stately homes?? must just be me and the OP then

Perhaps my missus could slip on a racy number and stand by the back door whilst you load your van?
Have you tried local warehouses ask if you can dispose of their broken pallets?
Find a local tree surgeon / professional gardener slip them a few pints.
local sawmill / carpenter
chat to the guys at the tip offer them a few quid.

You can't take it from a forest but you can buy (pay) for it, and CUK folks will give you this wood you can't find you can only buy for free?
Do you want some free beer whilst you are here collecting it?

There is just one thing you're missing, quite often people have trees in the back gardens - you know those green areas outside your house? Sometimes branches come off.... Hope you're keeping up with the lateral thinging... Now here is the leap of faith, sometime people give this wood away!!
As for your mrs, feel free to post the pick up here
Besides, if everyone burns wood, all the carbon the tree has kindly locked up from the atmosphere will be released, causing the Earth to warm and sea levels to rise and the Maldives will be gone and I'm planning on visiting there in the near future.
