Before setting off they phoned his wife to make sure he was well enough to see them. They were reassured to learn that, though weak, he was indeed well enough for them to visit.

I'm still sad that I wasn't able to see him, but I feel much more for my father, who had so many more reasons to want to say goodbye - this was his elder brother, who'd cheered him up in air raid shelters during the Blitz on Liverpool's docks, near which they lived.
Since then I've lost a couple of friends to cancer that overwhelms them in the space of weeks, and it's truly terrible when somebody dies within such a short time after the first signs of illness.
You and your friend's family have my heartfelt commiserations.
