My wife knows someone who is doing this. She's entertained the idea of doing it herself in 2-3 years when she is planning to retire in her mid-50s.
There was a similar wheeze until a few years ago where you could get finance for an MBA through the apprenticeship levy co-funding arrangement with the government. They cracked down on that so MBAs are no longer eligible AFAIK but then some business schools found a way round it.
They introduced a Level 7 Leadership Apprenticeship course which still adhered to the rules. Then upon completion, students could do a top up course to convert their level 7 qualification into an MBA, and voila!
