This or even getting a perm job. Better than nothing. For years I've always had it in my mind to do the HGV licence. Partly as a filler and secondly just out of interest. Not cheap to do though and I've never had enough time between gigs to get round to it sadly. May have to stay as a pipe dream that one.

I have never previously had the need to make any benefit claims or anything but with zero savings and without a contract looking to try and get some help were i can. Would anyone know how and if i could apply for universal credits, i have never been in this position before in all honesty.

But your employment status can be confusing, I mean, most contractors even in work don't understand their employment status properly. So you need to read these guides as UC treats us differently to what you'd think.

Mentioned in the above articles is that your business income is considered which is a surprise to some.

That should give you a clear idea of what to pick when it comes to employment status in the calulator. Bung the figures in as honestly as you can and hey presto. Remember, bending the truth or 'forgetting' to put the right details is fraud so IMO be whiter than white when answering the questions.

In google type universal credit site:forums.contractoruk.com and it will return all the threads where it's mentioned. There 'might' be something useful in there but there will be a lot of noise and arguing.

You'll definitely be entitled to job seekers allowance though, which is about £85 a week. I think it's one of the only benefits that isn't means tested. You can apply for it online.
