    +1 to Dishoom.

If it's funky and trendy they probably expect you to either have a big Mr Twit beard, or use a cutthroat or similar non-safety razor with your (non-badger) shaving brush.

It' a privately owned estate which I think many people don't realise so yeah they can get away with imposing security checks/searches that wouldn't otherwise be lawful. The security could kick you out if you didn't present ID when asked if they so wished. I remember they used to have serious issues with photography.

I'm staying at Tribe which purports to be a funky trendy boutique place but doesn't quite get there, nearly but not quite. The rooms are pretty tiny with an extremely small desk/workspace. There is only space to hang shirts and trousers but nowhere to put the rest of the clobber really and the bathroom is also ver compact and doesn't even have a power point for yuor shaver. Lifts have no buttons, all done via your card outside on a touchscreen. I chose it over the Hilton as at least it has a shower and not the old school bath that they have.

    - you can pay for everthing cash free and I now know how to use my phone for that I just like to tip staff cash so I know they're getting it and not the management
    - have been asked for ID twice (office and hotel) and both times tried to point out that the UK doesn't really have an ID system. I just gave them my Perso (German ID card)
    - turned on the telly and saw that Last Of The Summer Wine was on, one of my favourite programs except...Russ Abbott, the geezer from George and Mildred, the Chinese guy who used to beat up Peter Sellers is now Compo although there are still a few of the originals still in it. Confused me...
    - Gender neutral toilets for the first!

Polentina is walkable I'd say, although depends how adventurous you are. Wanted to go for ages, apparently really good Italian (and not the noodles with ketchup type).

    started a topic Canary Wharf

    Canary Wharf

Flew into City airport this morning and am now ensconsed in a hotel in Canary Wharf. Seems to be a few places to eat although no boozers and apparently public transport is on strike so going elsewhere could be fraught with being trapped in somewhere like Gidea Park! So, I know there are people who work in this place of concrete (and there were security checks this morning), recommendations would be appreciated. I've found Dishoom which doesn't look too bad and some place called Nandos which is a bit cheaper but that Hawksmoor place looks a bit steep (although I am on full expenses.) TIA and cheers

Working...
