I wonder how many of those 7.5M are jobless as soon as any company contribution to furlough is needed or furlough ends.

Friends of mine seem blissfully naive to this reality.

They won't be jobless for long. Plenty of short term opportunities in fruit picking and grave digging and then BAM!!! the Brexit export boom.

The furloughing has by necessity been rushed through without any proper checks and balances, and as a result there is a lot of money being wasted. Two of my school age kids have been furloughed from their zero hours part time jobs and are over the moon. No school, no work and free money. The youngest has just announced that he wants to buy a new mousepad for £70

It's likely almost entirely a waste of money.

The only businesses it will help are the ones that were probably due to go bankrupt anyway.

How many people have really been at a company for long enough to accrue serious redundancy rights?

Not only will we have more zombie companies, but we're now going to end up with zombie employees who should have been laid off themselves.
