That would be NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal). Metalheads of a certain age will also fondly remember the likes of Vardis, Tank, Tygers of Pan Tang, etc. etc.

One band that did play at Woodstock was Mountain (Nantucket Sleigh Ride) ... They were a bit metal.

I thought heavy metal was a term that was coined much later than that to refer to groups like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Saxon etc.
