It was late 2020. The New England Journal of Medicine had results on a new kind of vaccine. It used a bit of genetic code — RNA — to trick the body into making a bit of the Covid virus so when the real thing turned up, it knew how to destroy it. The main surprise was, it worked.
But there was another surprise. In the acknowledgments, the scientists thanked funders: NIAID, NIH. Oh, and Dolly Parton. That was how we learnt that a country music singer funded one of the most significant technologies of the 21st century.
Apparently, when Dolly got her Covid shot, she sang a song, to the tune of Jolene. “Vaccine, vaccine, vacc – eee – eee – eeen.”
