My phone has a manual focus mode, it is wonderful for pictures like that.

    Bumblebees are great. Nice.

I started dabbling with reverse mounted lenses on my old Canon 40D, basically an adapter so you screw it on to the front of the lens (the filter thread) and then on to the lens mount of the camera.

Got some suprisingly good results, this was hand held of a bee on the wall:

(Lens was an old manual focus zoom that cost about £8)

Seriously. Mine's a Fuji Finepix too. Only one I've found that does such close ups properly. Got a more expensive camera that focuses well when you do a prefocus but usually goes out of focus when you actually take the picture.

Here to lower the tone as usual. Soldier Beetle porn. A threesome on Giant Hogweed. Taken with my cheap little camera:

Me too, while I'm in a dilemma over upgrading a 7D or a 5DII (or both)

For macro, smartphones and compact cameras do a great job, even compared to dSLRs

I'm a total novice. This is a second hand Fuji Finepix S200EXR bought from my neighbour. One lense is all you get.

But for a Rookie it's good enough.

I like that I had a free trip to the common, really had a great time with my kids scampering after a grasshopper with them all on their elbows willing me to get a great shot and then the fun of sitting in the coffee shop afterwards sipping lemonade and discussing the photos.

Then hours afterwards viewing them on the laptop in wonderment at the beauty of these insects. I think I am hooked on photography straight away.

I'm sure perseverance will mean you will soon be able to post far superior shots and encourage me to buy bigger and better gear.
