Some antibiotics don't play well. I had some for a dental issue and was told "if you drink with these, you will be sick".
There's one or two that have a negative reaction. If you drink too much, then the body will struggle to break down the alcohol and allow the antibiotics to do the work, so drinking may well slow down the effectiveness of the antibiotics anyway.
These days, drinking alcohol generally makes me sick anyway.
I was reading the entry in the QI book about this this week, so I'll share where the perception that you shouldn't have alcohol with antibiotics comes from...
When antibiotics came to prevalence, they were mainly used to treat syphilis. Doctors worked out that people were less likely to take precautions against syphilis if they were drunk, so they told people not to drink while taking antibiotics.

Get your antibiotics and then check them on the internet. They have two reactions with alcohol, either drive you loopy or the alcohol lessens the effect. This idea that all antibiotics have really bad reactions with drink isn't true. Make sure you research it properly though.

Antibiotics do not work against virus. Some doctors will give out antibiotics just to shut the patient up. Antibiotics only work on bacteria. Unless you have a bacterial lung infection, forget it and stop whingeing
Had it for over 6 weeks now and there's a few at client co with the same.
Just when you think it's gone for a day or so it comes back. Driving me nuts.
I know if I go to the quacks they'll give me Anti-Biotics but don't really want to take these over Christmas.
Thanks for listening anyway.
