          Antibiotics do not work against virus. Some doctors will give out antibiotics just to shut the patient up. Antibiotics only work on bacteria. Unless you have a bacterial lung infection, forget it and stop whingeing

                I was reading the entry in the QI book about this this week, so I'll share where the perception that you shouldn't have alcohol with antibiotics comes from...

                When antibiotics came to prevalence, they were mainly used to treat syphilis. Doctors worked out that people were less likely to take precautions against syphilis if they were drunk, so they told people not to drink while taking antibiotics.

                    Some antibiotics don't play well. I had some for a dental issue and was told "if you drink with these, you will be sick".
