I did 4 weeks for a direct client (that I'd worked for before). Met the bloke Friday morning, got the okay in the afternoon, started Monday. I didn't actually sort out the contract until 2 weeks in. Not that I'd recommend that.

The sooner you're there the sooner you're earning. If the contract turns out to be impossible you can always walk.

Never done a start next day but two of my gigs were interview Tues/Weds and start on Monday. That was only made possible due to QDOS turning round my review in super quick time. One case was a contractor had given backword at the last minute and the other the client was desperate.

I did - just because the outgoing dev was leaving on Wed and I was interviewed on Tue, so there was max 1 day handover.

Didn't get the contract reviewed as it was only an 8 week gig. I'm still here 2.5 years later...

had a call via my website yesterday and was asked if i could to start today. as i'm wfh today it crossed my mind briefly to do one job for the price of two… but then it's better to spread this stuff about rather than cram it in.

Always say you're available to start tomorrow. Then if/when they really do want you to start tomorrow, just say there's going to be a few days delay.

By that time, they've already spent time deciding they want you, and a few more days won't be a problem.

And of course you always get the client who take a week to look at CVs, another few days to sort interview, a week to get back to you, then its urgent and you've got to start tomorrow. Pisses me off no end.

.. from past experience this conversation happens on a Friday morning and the contract doesnt actually materialise until Monday lunchtime. Its rushed through review and signed to then arrive on site midweek to a slightly confused client who wasnt expecting you until the following week.

Yep. Had that too. Rushed my nuts off because lying dog agent said if I couldnt start on monday then client would have to cancel it all. Turn up monday and client says didnt think you were here till next week.

Agent wants you in the door and earning him comission.

I usually trot out a line about having to go through my due dilligence process, which seems to meet with much less resistance than saying i'm sending the contract for review.

I've used the QDOS same day service which was turned around in a couple of hours. If there was anything wrong with it then I wouldn't be expecting it be resolved in time for a next day start, regardless of what the agent had promised the end client.

To be honest, unless you skip the actual contract step I can't see how you can do it?

If you get contract reviewed, it takes a day with QDOS. Thats even assuming agency get contract out straight away. In my experience, actual recruitment agent thinks its a done deal but then some admin person usually takes at least half a day to get contract sent.

Then, of course, theres usually at least one thing following contract review and the old opt out argument lol. Sure clients and agents live on another planet sometimes (but then I guess they just want you in and dont care that you're looking after your interests).

Got one now trying to sort me an interview for monday. Had him now saying OK, so I'll tell the client interview monday if they decide then, you can start the following monday so you can give a weeks notice in current gig. Yeah right - thats not even a week for starters.

Agents always push this. Just tell them that you'll start as soon as the contract gets reviewed.
