Good question. I'd agree it's not something to be done lightly and without a good feel for the situation.

However for what it's worth, I've done exactly this and as a result a year later landed the best rate of my contracting career so far. Client direct and using my own contract and ToB. Quite why I linked and quite why I then followed up a year later does not make sense even to me! The guy was a cat-1, power-tripping, a-hole. I nearly walked on day-3 of the contract. Since then he got fired. Currently in talks with the new management with a view to extend to what will be almost a year.

In this instance I wouldn't contact the client. Maybe if you don't get it you can send them a message wishing them luck and thanks blah blah blah
This is exactly what I did when I was still new at contracting. Within 5 minutes after sending the message on LinkedIn to the endclient I got the agency on the phone, I was unprofessional blah blah blah blacklist blah blah blah.

Maybe agents treat us like numpties because sometimes we act like it? Our own worst enemy and that.
Indeed, might I suggest a more sympathetic place for the poor soul to visit for further empathy.

    No-one cares.

Life's too short to waste on this - move on and do something else.

Mistake number 1 was contacting the client directly, number 2 is getting yourself worked up about it, its par for the course.

I think you can still link with clients on linkedin if you've not got the role.

It helps me build up a network of people who need my skills

Not sure if, as a client, you can rely on the agency. I wonder how many clients ask the agent to please let the contractor know the outcome and/or why but then the agent cant be arsed?
If your contract is with the agency, you ask the agency.
You don't start moaning about Tesco's price of beans directly with Heinz do you?
