Except on occasions when he calls a spade a "now then, those aren't for the likes of us: just dig with your bare hands"

Not me!! They have loo roll like sandpaper here and no wetwipes for my delicate botty.

Oddly enough I didn't mean to come across too aggressive for a change. To me 'taking the piss' is just a standard term for not doing things by the book. Rest of it wasn't worded as best it could be I admit but was in a rush.

I still believe however that people who ask questions that they obviously know is pushing the boundries a little, should be a more aware of the boundries if they are going to push them. I would hate to think what some people are claiming that they didn't ask about!! Saying that it could just be me that plays it too safe at times.

This would be a meeting which you are the only attendee I take it? Have lunch for a couple of hours, write a note saying "take £20k" and that's the meeting done?

On topic, perhaps the poster should do as he suggests and then drop a note to HMRC checking that it's OK.

I would hate it if he called a spade a pitcher fork. Or even ask for Fork Handles and get four candles instead.

He's right on the money too. If you are the kind of contractor who sits in a restaurent congratulating yourself that you are getting a large percentage of the meal paid for by the British tax payer, you're not likely to be at front of the queue when the next big thing looms on the horizon are you? Have you thought of pinching loo rolls from work too - you could save yourself about £20 over a year!

I think it's classed as entertainment. The company can pay for it, but it won't be tax deductible for CT purposes.

I find NorthernLads interjections quite amusing, even though I have been on the end of one of them myself.

We get enough sugar coating in our lives. A frank comment is always refreshing.

If you can't find something specific that says you can do it, apply this rule:

If someone told you they were doing it and your immediate response was "Your taking the piss". Don't do it.

You do not need a board meeting in a restaurant. You cannot have a meeting while eating. You have the meeting around a table, the meeting ends, the social aspect starts.

If you can't work this type of stuff out for yourself you really shouldn't walking such a fine line between ripping HMRC off and running a business IMO.

You claiming the £150 per year for xmas party is perfectly reasonable.

You and the Mrs going on the razzle every weekend at the companies expense would probably raise eyebrows at HMRC.

    I believe so.
From your posts, it looks like you are trying to work out all the expenses that you can claim - are you aware of the Xmas party allowance, think it was 150 per person last time I looked.
