eek - what reasons do those umbrellas give for feeding into Ltds?

But there are a couple of umbrellas who are willing to do deemed payments into your limited company - don't do it as it makes no actual sense...

I was mildly surprised when the guy from my agency said he’d heard of contractors going through an umbrella to feed their LtdCo. I was wondering whether the umbrella was paying the gross amount to the LTdCo? Otherwise it would make no sense.

The money exiting from the umbrella already has PAYE and NI paid - it’s net, going to you personally.
There is no point in that money going into your Ltd, which then has to pay CT on any income.
So I don’t expect anyone to have that experience.
