Also the thing with homosexuality is in my view misunderstood. They believed that you shouldn't seek pleasure from sex but it was ok for procreation. Now seen as homosexual sex can't be for procreation it can only be for pleasure which is the sin, not particularly because it was two men. In fact a lot of the incontinent popes used boys as this was seen as less of a sin than a woman!

Those against point at a handful of verses, those not against explain that not only were those verses focused on very specific circumstances, but that the whole concept of [homo]sexuality was understood very differently - same-sex relations being viewed as an overflow of lust i.e. "they were so depraved, they even had sex with other men/animals".

The OT/NT thing is a bit more complicated than "the OT doesn't apply", but the verses from Leviticus could reasonably be construed to not apply just as the rest of Leviticus is normally seen not to apply.

All this moves into needing a decent understanding of the whole bible and the peoples of the times, you can't really cherry-pick a verse as a simple answer.

Are you sure that this is not just a case of trying to crowbar the bible into having the same morals as modern secular society? Hence the playing down of torture, oppression etc.
