On Friday, I'm off to the Belle Vue dog track near Manchester for the first time. I don't know what to expect, can anyone share any experiences of this type of event...

Well you line up with the other greyhounds and when the plastic rabbit flies past and the rope goes up you run like fook after it like you think it's a real one.
Old men in raincoats stand at the side and drink beer and place bets.
IIRC Bellevue is in Manchester quite close to the City Centre and rough as fuk.
Seriously I've been a couple of times and it's good fun. Well, I am from Bolton.Comment

Born & bred Essex here. In a previous life I used to go to The 'Stow and Romford.
Great for people watching, keep your wallet in a safe place and you'll have a good time as long as you have a few pints, don't take it too seriously and wash your hands afterwards.
As far as gambling is concerned I always did combination forecast bets as the odds on winners only were nothing to get excited about. There's no "form" as such as in the main the mug punters haven't a clue and the people in the know have their own game going on.
Sorted.
p.s. Many years ago I used to work with a contractor who was also a bookie that operated out at The 'Stow. The two occupations had a lot in common in those days!...my quagmire of greed....my cesspit of laziness and unfairness....all I am doing is sticking two fingers up at nurses, doctors and other hard working employed professionals...
