Why is it if as a tenant you have to fight to get your deposit back, yet are always expected to move into a dirty house?

I know a £1,000 a month doesn't buy much mortgage these days, but £150 would have bought the landlord a complete house clean.

The garden was supposed to have been tidied up before we moved in since it hasn't been touched since last summer. It has a large garden front and back - it'll probably cost me £200 to get it to the standard it should have been in when we got the keys.

Why is that?

Why do we only ever get given one of each key?
