OK, I can understand the lack of enthusiasm.

Mrs Gonzo gets a £100 ad hoc payment if she works 4 hours on the weekend (she is not supposed to get anything at all but they realise they will in serious doo doo if people don't do any overtime).

I have tried to explain that after NI and Tax this means she only gets £59 and it is not worth it and she has listened. So there is not much incentive for people paying permie taxes to even bother.

Nah, don't worry about it. I spent a couple of years engaged to a girl 5 years younger than me, I don't think it really matters. (Unless he was 17, then you'd be Mrs Robinson )

It is well crappy, but the client's just given me a 6 month extension with potential for more to come, so I'm trying to keep them sweet - not too confident about the market right now...

          I wouldn't worry.

When I was 28 I went out with a 19 year old for about a year. It turned out to be the most grown up relationship that I had had.
