The GRUB utility assumes the first physical device is to be the boot device, apparently.

It has trashed the MBR and possible affected the partition table.

So the backups I did won't help - I didn't back up the MBR.

FWIW you could boot off a Linux live CD or DVD - that's what I always do

I did so but it runs like a dog.

I wanted a configurable Linux on which I could install stuff and get decent performance.
