Fortunately it was doing it before I was overcome with this terrible affliction; plus it sounds exactly like a fan with knackered bearings as opposed to a buzz, so I think my diagnosis is correct.

Have you checked online to see if someone has posted how to change the fan?

I was lucky with my Sony FX201 - replacing the fan is a common requirement so there were step-by-step photo instructions available.
