Well, I found my sheet of 8 x 4 mdf and my sheet of 8 x 4 hardboard at last.

At 'last'? Never heard of them. Are they local? Would you recommend them?

The hardboard was easy enough, it's quite light and bendy so it went around the corners in the stairwell...
