Switch it to manual focus like you said and aim for the right part of the swing motion you're after - give it just a tad longer in the exposure and you'll get some movement in the shot.
Alternatively use a fill-in flash and longer exposure with fixed focus on the eyes. Sync the flash so it fires at the end of the exposure when she's travelling towards you - vice versa if she's moving away.

Experimentation - what it's all about.

Buuger about with the F stops too. You stand a better chance with an infinite depth of field, but cant remember wheter that is fully open or closed.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

large f number = larger depth of field = smaller opening

having more field depth is a starter as it's easier to get a better shot.
accomplishing this with a narrow dof is trickier but will look ace.

f/1 is always a good starting point, though you might have to prop/tether the swing in place to get the required effect.

                Agree with that.
Once flooked one at the TT only thing in focus is Joey Dunlops helmet (ooh er). You can see the intensity in his eyes. Everything else being increasingly out of focus make it look realy fast. Awesome pick and pure accident.
Haven't picked up the SLR in about 12 years. Might just have to try one of these digital things myself.
