I'm not really sure where that came from but I suspect it's derived from the anthropomorphism of Diptera. For many years prior to the use of the term "tits up" the "dying fly" was a frequently made move in popular dance establishments. Said move involved lying on ones back and waving ones legs in the air. I made all of this up btw. It's supposed to come from WW2. When planes got shot down and turned on their backs the marker in the horizon indicator (a W shape) would become an M. Fnaar, fnaar.
