Anyway, I have turned to consumerism to ease my suffering by ordering a set of AirPods Pro and the new Apple Watch Series 10 in titanium. The former will arrive on Thursday, the latter towards the end of the month when it's actually released

And Faber have emailed to inform me that they're publishing Lord of the Flies as a graphic novel. I never liked that book so even though the sample pages shown look quite nice, I think I'll pass

"Liked"? In my case it's "detested". I think it was a set book which is the kiss of death for almost anything.

Addendum: Apparently the aforementioned is some sort of literary criticism/whatever of "The Coral Island" by R M Ballantyne, which I remember reading many decades ago & enjoying so doing.

I didn't have it as a set book but we had a copy lying around at home so I read it, and yes - I think "detested" is about the right word

It's possible it's in one of the boxes from the parental loft, as there are quite a few books and things in the ones I've checked out that I never thought I'd see again. If it is, I might reread it, just to see if I still hate it as much

Kidnapped by RL Stevenson was the first literary brick wall for me. I couldn’t get more than a few chapters before I gave up. It was shocking the first time as before that I had stormed through everything I picked up.

Never read that one. I once managed to read Treasure Island but I wasn't that enamoured of it, as evidenced by the fact that unlike many books, I never read it a second time

The British government has made an absolute hash of it; about the only thing they've achieved is not having to hand over some documents which would have proved that Robert Armstrong had committed perjury, which have only recently been released to the National Archives
