I've had fights over the years with numerous people in call centres. I tend to win when I can quote the relevant law NOT random guidelines at them and escalate to their manager.

From what I've seen on various forums frequented by tradesmen, it seems the reason for the 75cm clearance isn't because they fear heat will damage the thing, but because you need to be able to turn the electricity off if the cooker catches fire

Also, one chap says that as long as you're willing to sign the relevant certificate stating that you were informed of the issue before installation and you accept the resultant risk, they're covered. So I need to find a local chap who takes such an eminently sensible approach

I would go to the fuse box and turn all the electricity off that way I wouldn't get burnt.

Mind you the electric points for all my large kitchen electrical appliances including the cooker are behind them.
