As is usual, I perused the assembler output of said compiler which revealed that one of the optimisations is that insead of using

CALL FRED

and

FRED
    RETURN

it uses

GOTO FRED
HERE

and

FRED
 goto HERE

which I suppose saves stack space if you're only calling the thing once.
