            Runnymede, or more precisely a small island in the Thames there. It's in Chapter XI (and the first few lines of Chapter XII) of Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog)

                      Around Northampton, the overhead warning signs came on, declaring "Oncoming Vehicle" - not the kind of thing you want to meet on the M1

                      They stayed like that until just after Watford Gap services, where said vehicle had presumably been safely corralled.
