Black box transponder has a limited radius of a few kilometers which makes pinpointing it to the above scenario a little tricky.

It's not actully the phone ringing you hear when you dial it anyway, it's the exchange or voicemail platform.

The a/c was checked in the last two weeks. Not only that the B777 has an excellent safety record.

It was repaired after scraping a wing on the tarmac though wasn't it? Not sure it's relevant but still...

But wouldn't a high altitude breakup be something the pilots would notice before it happens? Surely they should notice something odd with the instruments etc. and tell 'the tower' or whomever that all is not well?
